Prepare delictious food in the large, fully equipped, kitchen that boasts updated appliances and enjoy meals together, in the adjoining dining section or in the spacious living room area. Cozy up on the large cushy, new sectional sofa and watch a great movie in the living room on the flat screen TV or snuggle together and view the flat screen TV in both bedrooms. Enjoy the outdoors and ocean breezes in cozy furniture on the covered front lanai. Sun on the side patio lounge chairs, relax under the palm trees on a hammock or play in the warm sunshine on the large, surrounding yard with your kids. Pack up the family and head out into each day with the fully stocked beach amenities including snorkel gear, beach chairs and more. To close out your day of rest or exploring the wonders of the Big Island, walk over to the shoreline and enjoy some of the most incredible sunsets that Puako has to offer.

Paniau Surf is located directly across from Paniau park which has incredible snorkeling in the summer and surfing in the winter. There is also a path that you can walk extending from the park all the way to Mauna Lani resort area, with many beautiful spots for swimming, sunbathing and snorkeling along the way. The Puako General Store is a few minutes away and sells basic groceries and take out foods. The house is a 40 minute drive from the airport. Renting a car is highly recommended.

We heard and saw the waves during big swell and enjoyed amazing snorkeling during the calmer times. The house was decorated beautifully, had a great kitchen, great outdoor shower, and very comfortable bedrooms for all. We used the BBQ most nights and sat out on the back patio area enjoying the night air."

Fabulous Stay! 5 out of 5 stars! My wife and I and 2 teenagers stayed for a week in this cottage. It was perfect for us. There were 3 bedrooms (one with a king, one with a queen and one with a futon) so we had plenty of room to spread out. There are A/C units in each bedroom and one in the living room, but didn't need them much and preferred the ocean breezes. The house is just across the road from the ocean where we got to see lots of perfect sunsets and spend afternoons walking the beach and finding sea turtles basking in the sun. There are several great sandy beaches in the area (10-20 minute drive). I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

We could not have been more satisfied. Imagine visiting the Big Island and having the property and the whole visit exceed expectations. We had stayed twice before in a condo in Puako and this visit was much more rewarding.

We have stayed in Puako on previous trips to the Big Island. This was our first time lodging at Paniau Surf Cottage, and it is, by far, the best accommodation weve rented. We are a family of five with three teenagers. I was initially worried about sharing one bathroom, but it was never a problem. The kids loved the outdoor shower. I was also worried about being cramped, but the home is more spacious than it appears in the online photos. We enjoyed watching birds and butterflies and geckos around the yard, and we slept well because the area is so peaceful at night. The cottage is right across the street from one of our favorite snorkeling spots, and there are lots of tidepools to explore on the reef. We spent far more time outside on various decks and porches than on other trips. I was impressed that the house is set up so well for an extended stay: the washer and dryer are full-size, the kitchen is well-equipped and workable, there is plenty of seating indoors and out. Sheila, the caretaker who lives next door, is wonderful. We were thoroughly at home in Paniau Surf Cottage, and we will be back to stay there again.

Lovely stay for a family This is our second visit to Puako, first though at this beach cottage and we loved it. We are a family of five that fit comfortably (our daughters shared a bed) in the spacious house that had good amenities and a nice layout. The property is well maintained and the owners are responsive. A woman next door helps take care of any issues that might arise and when we arrived had some nice goodies (baked goods etc.) waiting for us. The property is right across the street from the ocean and you can easily just walk across Puako drive and watch the sunset, snorkel (though the surf at times can be rough) or take a short walk to one of the local beaches or the very cool petroglyphs. We would stay at this home again, we loved it! ~ Jonah

Overall, we had a fine experience staying in this home. The area where the house is located is very peaceful, kitchen is well stocked, and has amazing access to the ocean across the street (the caretaker also lives next door, and was very responsive to our questions). The house itself may not be the fanciest place in the neighborhood, but it is comfortable with air conditioning and ceiling fans throughout, three separate bedrooms (one with a futon bed) and a comfortable living room. The house also backs up to an undeveloped area with plenty of birds, wildlife and great privacy. This being the tropics, bugs are also quite prevalent -- some of which occasionally like to visit inside the house (whether you want them or not). Puako is a great, off-the-beaten-path area and perfect for those who want a quiet retreat. ~ Peter

Paniau Cottage was a dream....beautifully decorated, well appointed kitchen, amazingly comfy beds, a killer outdoor shower (we never even used the indoor one) and very clean. We arrived to fresh tropical flowers placed throughout the house , the cooler and fans on to refresh us, and sweet notes from the caretaker inviting us to call her if we needed anything! The location is unbelievable...last house on the block (quiet), the best snorkeling right across the street (really!) and a lovely forest in the backyard where we awoke each morning to gentle bird sounds. We would rent this house again in a heartbeat! ~ Jessica

We really like Paniau Surf Cottage! My wife and I just spent our second February at the end of the road in Puako ... and we will be returning in 2019 for our third February stay. Paniau Surf Cottage became even nicer this year with the addition of the lanai dining table and privacy screen, the small refrigerator for our wine, extra bath towels, etc. On our arrival, we found flowers and a spotlessly clean cottage. The cottage and furnishings could not be more comfortable and inviting. We do not like to use AC ... and with the excellent cross-ventilation, the interior stayed pleasantly cool during the warm days. The lanai with its overhead fans and comfortable chairs was a pleasant place to spend a few tropical hours. We absolutely have no complaints. We enjoyed the privacy and quiet ... and the many varieties of birds (even the francolins ... waking us at 6 am each morning). There were at least three types of geckos, a mongoose, a couple of cats, turkeys back in the kiawe forest ... and late one night, four wild pigs by the picnic table. The grounds are excellently landscaped ... with a large banyan tree, palms, coconut trees, a mango tree, a couple of papaya trees, other tropical trees, plumeria shrubs, etc., etc., etc. Nature in its many forms is not predictable ... and it is not sanitized. This was the second wettest February in 25 years (according to TV weatherman Guy Hagi). With the increased rain, the vegetation flourished ... attracting more insects, more rodents, and more birds of more kinds (I suppose Elton John would call it the Circle of Life). We did have some mosquitoes at night on the lanai (the fans helped) and no-see-ums during overcast days. There were a few inevitable cockroaches in the cottage (the 747s stayed outside), a few crazy ants ... and one evening on the kitchen counter, a cute little mouse (my wife's description) which found its way back outside. Sheila, our friend next door, is an important component of the joy of Paniau Surf Cottage ... always available to help but never intrusive. Finally, I should remark that I still have not learned how to operate the Blu Ray player. Perhaps next year! ~ James

~ Best family-friendly beach cottage ~ 5 Stars! We really enjoyed our stay here at the end of Puako Beach Drive. The cottage was perfect for our family of four. Because the cottage is surrounded by forest there are many birds to watch and listen for. My kids loved seeing the geckos and occasional mongoose slinking across the road. You can hear the ocean swells at night from the bedrooms. There is a beach access right across the road for watching the sunset and swimming (when the swell isn't high). Took us a few days to find the entry point (look for the keyhole) but by observing the locals and asking questions we figured it out. The snorkelling is really good out off of the reef here. This location is perfect. You can walk south to the mega-resorts like the Mauna Lani and Fairmont Orchid, or it is a short drive north to Wailea Beach and Hapuna Beach (best boogie boarding). The towns of Waimea and Hawi are not too far away for exploring and farmer's markets. The cottage has everything you could need: well-appointed kitchen, outdoor shower, laundry, speedy internet, beach & snorkelling equipment, BBQ, quiet and calm surroundings, caretaker on site if you need help with anything. We will definitely stay here again when we come to the Big Island again.

The homemade chocolate chip cookies and fresh flowers were a nice touch. The house was well stocked in every way, beach toys, sunscreen, drink mixers, kitchen utensils, pillows, bathroom supplies, it pretty much had everything you could need! The grounds were well kept and the outside shower a real treat. I loved sitting on the side porch reading and listening to the ocean and all the birds. The beach across the street is a hidden gem. At low tide the little pools are warm and so fun to swim in. We found the snorkeling to be the best on the island right there, filled with fish and turtles. Loved being at the end of the road. So thank you for a lovely place! We will look forward to coming back to the Big Island again, had so much fun exploring hiking swimming, being. Appreciate your excellent service with the house, Take care.

Puako Beach Cottage Right across the street from the ocean. The sum of Paniau Surf Cottage is greater than its parts My wife of fifty plus years and I have been visiting Puako each year for many years. How odd it is, to find a nearly-perfect house at the end of Puako Beach Drive after all those years. We rented the cottage a year ago and almost immediately, began to have questions about the location and the house. Would the house be as portrayed in images and words? Would it be dusty from the access road behind? Would it be noisy from the parking lot across the street? Would the neighbors be quiet? Would the house be hot during the day? Would it be clean? Would there be mildew and/or mold? Would there be excessive rules and regs? The answer to each of these questions (and others which I now cant recall) was NO. Upon our arrival, Sheila met us and took us through a tour of the cottage showing off the features and explaining what needed to be explained. [At this point, I must be brutally honest and say that as an American male I do not easily ask for directions. I never did figure out the DVR.] She was an invaluable neighbor and helper and now our friend. Patty, the property manager, also was prompt with helpful answers and useful information. All aspects of the house and grounds delighted us. We particularly liked the lanai with its comfortable furniture, lights and fans (We ate all of our lunches and a couple of dinners there). Inside, we liked the simplicity and openness, the tile floors, the many ceiling fans and the lack of frou-frou. During the day, the interior remained cool with good ventilation from all sides. The trade winds provided a refreshing breeze from the ocean at the front. At night, cool winds came down from Mauna Kea to the rear. The house recently underwent an excellent upgrading ... what we needed was there and everything worked for us. Outside, the lawn and comfortable lounge chairs were perfect for catching some rays. The open space to the rear and side (views of volcanoes and kiawe) and the many varieties of butterflies and birds (including a pueo behind the house one day) plus several mongooses surrounded us with Big Island nature. A short walk across the street brought us to Paniau Bay and enjoyable shore walks in both directions. There were many spectacular sunsets. If we were to come again to Puako, we absolutely would reserve the Paniau Surf Cottage with no reservations what-so-ever. Hey, wait a minute ... we are returning next February!

Pattie, I loved the house. Liked the end of the road privacy and space, and the park across the road. The house was beautifully decorated and refreshingly uncluttered. Liked the high-end cabinets and appliances. If I could be sure of coming again next year and my exact dates, I would not hesitate to rent this house again. Our only complaint would be just one toilet. But that is a small price to pay relative to the rest of the house. Thank you for everything. Sheila was great. We appreciated her extra attention to our needs. Karen

We are two couples who vacation together every year. We stayed at the Paniau Surf Puako house and it could not have been more perfect for our needs. With exposures in all four directions there is a delightful ocean breeze 24/7. This beach lanai house has charm and character. The rooms were spacious and we were particularly delighted with the large, updated fully appointed kitchen. We arrived in the late afternoon, unpacked, and strolled across the street to the ocean where we sited a number of spouting whales. A good omen to what was a wonderful four days on the north-west coast of the big island. We also found Patti, Jonathan and the caretaker next door extremely helpful and attentive. Don & Polly S.

We loved our stay at Paniau Surf! This was a newly renovated, 3 bedroom cottage and it was lovely. Nice furnishings, comfortable beds and very spacious! We loved the outdoor shower and covered linai. The kitchen was well equipped and anything we didn't find, we were readily helped by Sheila, who is the next door caretaker. She greeted us on our arrival and was always happy to meet our needs. She also provided helpful information about the area and the island. The best part of this cottage is the location! It is at the end of the dead end Puako Beach Road, so there is very little traffic. The yard is secluded and all you have to do to get to the ocean is walk across the street to the public beach access. While the "beach" there is rocky, it is a fabulous place for whale watching, exploring tide pools and it is a local hangout for surfers, so we were able to watch them riding the big waves. The location was also very convenient to the Fairmont Orchid, where I was attending a conference. My "commute" consisted of a beautiful beach walk that took about 10 minutes. Overall, this was a great experience and I would highly recommend Paniau Surf! The only thing our group wished we had had were a couple of boogie boards to use during our stay, otherwise it had everything we needed!
