Visit Mauna Kea (The White Mountain)
Mauna Kea is a place that holds great spiritual significance to the Hawaiian people. There are five peaks on Hawaii Island, simply known as "Five Mountains" all sacred, and as the highest peak, Mauna Kea is one of the most sacred. It is also known as Mauna O Wakea- the mountain of the god Wakea, from whom all things in Hawaiian are descended. The summit of Mauna Kea was seen as the region of the gods, a place where benevolent spirits reside. An ancient kapu- law- allowed only high-ranking tribal chiefs to visit its peak. Mauna Kea was a landmark for ancient navigators and has been, and continues to be a place of prayer and reflection for Hawaiians, who go to Mauna Kea in search of their mana- divine power- and to understand those ancient spiritual connections between heaven and earth. This is symbolized by the stone and wood lele- the altar- at the summit. It is a place to show your appreciation for all that Mauna Kea means and to remember to malama the aina- take care of the land. There has been, and continues to be, great debate among Hawaiians over human constructions, such as the telescopes, at the summit- many feel this is a desecration of their beliefs. The Office of Mauna Kea Management is advised on such matters by a council called Kahu Ku Mauna, which aims to preserve the spiritual and cultural perspectives of the Hawaiians during any development on the mountain. There are telescopes from around the world who study our night skies. Mauna Lani Resort
Mauna Lani Resort is a luxury ocean front Hawaii golf resort with two championship courses, the Francis H. I'i Brown North and South Courses. Both golf courses offer a challenging experience to novice and professional golf enthusiasts alike. Mauna Lani was home to the Senior Skins Golf Game for 11 years and now hosts the prestigous Hawaii State Open in December. The Big Island golf courses at this luxury resort are masterpieces of design, each strikingly different, yet equally challenging. Each course is a world apart geographically, and in playing experience. Two endangered Nene, Hawaii State's Bird have recently been visiting Mauna Lani's North Course. Be on the lookout as you tee-off and please enjoy these majestic birds from a distance. For tee-times call 808-885-6655. MAUNA LANI RESORT HAWAII STATE OPEN Mark your calendar for December 12 - 14, 2014 Event Updates - PGA Aloha Section ~~ KOHALA COAST, Hawaii -- If you thought the oceanfront par-3 seventh hole on the Francis H. I'i Brown South Course at Mauna Lani Resort was beautiful, just wait an hour. The 15th hole delivers a gorgeous grand finale. Stunning is the only way to describe this 196-yard par 3 over an ocean inlet where the green hugs the rocky coast. A third scenic ocean lookout -- the 13th green along the cliffs -- makes the 6,924-yard South golf course more popular with tourists than Mauna Lani's North Course, even though most critics and locals favor the challenge and strategy of the latter. These same views bedazzled the audience who tuned in to watch Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Hale Irwin and others compete in the Senior Skins Game from 1990-2000. Golfers can't go wrong playing either course. In 2013, Golfweek ranked the North Course no. 14 and the South Course no. 15 among the best public golf courses of the Hawaiian islands. Shared from Golf Advisor http://www.golfadvisor.com/articles/mauna-lani-resort-south-course-kohala-coast-big-island-hawaii-14406.htm ~~ GREEN Mauna Lani Resort was named the only US property in North America to be honored as one of the world's Top Luxury Eco Friendly Beach Destinations by Cond Nast Traveler. Mauna Lani's solar energy innovations earned the resort the distinction of generating the most solar electric power of any luxury resort in the world. Cond Nast Traveler also recognized Mauna Lani Resort's green sea turtle program as an ecotourism attraction. The resort also was selected as one of only ten golf resorts in the world for the first-ever Green Golf Award as a leader in environmental stewardship by Golf Magazine. (this information is from the Mauna Lani web site) ~~
